The smokestack at the 500,000-square-foot plant on King Street West was levelled without incident, touching down at 11:25 a.m.
The event was part of continuing demolition work by Restoration Environmental Contractors (REC), on behalf of Junic Construction of Gatineau, Quebec.
Upwards of 500 local residents, former employees and local dignitaries gathered to witness the event, which was characterized not only as a demolition project, but one of redevelopment of the 54-acre site as well.
Plans are for the site to become home to new residential construction.
"We are very proud to be part of this Brockville redevelopment with our client Junic Construction," stated Don Bremner, President of REC in a prepared release.
Brockville, like many communities in Ontario, has been hit hard by the loss of many manufacturing jobs, but in recent years has focused on rebulding its economic base.
